Citrus County Board of County Commissioners Chairman Jeff Kinnard will be holding a Town Hall Meeting for the general public to attend on Thursday, February 28, 2019. The meeting will be held at Central Ridge Library, located at 425 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Beverly Hills, Fl. 34465from 5:30pm to 7pm. 

“My aim is to connect with the community on issues and challenges facing our county, from public parks to road resurfacing.  I want to know what’s on people’s minds and have a format to discuss, reflect, and problem solve,” explained Kinnard. “Please come with questions or concerns, as this is intended to be an informal setting.”

Seeking applications for seat on the Citrus Springs Advisory Board

The Citrus County Board of County Commissioners is seeking applications for the Citrus Springs Advisory Board.  This Advisory Board is seeking two qualified regular members to complete two-year terms that will expire on January 31, 2020.

Eligible applicants must reside full time and own property within the boundaries of the Citrus Springs Municipal Service Benefit Unit as approved by the Board of County Commissioners.

The Citrus Springs Advisory Board meets the first Wednesday of every month at 9:00am at the Citrus Springs Community Building, located at 1570 W. Citrus Springs Blvd in Citrus Springs. The purpose of this board is to provide facilities, street lighting, beautification and other essential facilities and municipal services for the Citrus Springs area.

Suncoast Parkway 2 Construction and Lane Closure Updates

The Florida Turnpike is advising motorists of lane closures:

•      CR 480/West Oak Park Boulevard, single lane closures, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, February 25 through Friday, March 1 

•      Grover Cleveland Boulevard, single lane closures, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, February 25 and Tuesday, February 26.

•       US 98 eastbound and westbound in the vicinity of the Suncoast Parkway, long-term single lane closures. One lane in each direction will remain open to traffic. 

The Florida Turnpike is also advising: US 98 eastbound and westbound in the vicinity of the Suncoast Parkway, long-term single lane closures. One lane in each direction will remain open to traffic. 

Florida’s Turnpike is constructing the Suncoast Parkway 2, a four-lane toll facility that extends the existing Suncoast Parkway northward for 13 miles from US 98 in Hernando County to SR 44 in Citrus County. The project includes constructing full interchanges at US 98 and West Cardinal Street and a partial interchange at SR 44, one wildlife crossing and four wildlife culverts, 15 new bridges, two all-electronic tolling gantries and equipment buildings, and related drainage, lighting, highway signing, traffic signalization, guardrail and sidewalk.

The Suncoast Trail, part of Florida’s Statewide Greenways and Trails System, will also be extended from US 98 to SR 44, with a pedestrian overpass constructed over US 98. The cost for this project is approximately $135 million and it is expected to be completed in 2022. 

Hernando/Citrus Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) February Meeting Summary

•           The MPO Board Appointed Commissioner Jeff Kinnard from Citrus County as the 2019 MPO Chairman, and Commissioner John Allocco from Hernando County as the 2019 Vice-Chairman.  Committee assignments were also made.

•           Staff advised the MPO Board that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has a user-friendly website which includes information for projects in both Hernando and Citrus Counties.  The website can be found at: http://www.fdottampabay.com/

•           The Florida Department of Transportation, District Five, provided the MPO Board with an update of the South Sumter Trail.  This section of trail is part of the larger Coast to Coast Trail network. 

•           The City of Inverness provided the MPO Board with a presentation relating to the Historic Towns of the Rock Ridge Phosphate Trail.  This campaign concentrates on promoting cohesive connectivity and tourism through a multi-county effort with Inverness, Brooksville, Floral City and Dunnellon as destination points for visitors interested in heritage, culture and nature. 

•           The MPO Board approved a Resolution supporting the creation of 3 new multi-use corridors to include: Polk County to Collier County, Suncoast Parkway Extension to Georgia, and the Northern Turnpike Connector (Florida Turnpike northwest to Suncoast Parkway).  The Resolution is being provided to Governor Ron DeSantis, and Senate President Bill Galvano.

•           The MPO Board adopted a Resolution establishing targets for the five required safety performance measures.  The performance measures must be adopted on an annual basis.

•           A request to renew the lease agreement for a new one-year term (July 1, 2019-July 30, 2020) for MPO office space at 1661 Blaise Drive, Brooksville, FL 34601 was authorized by the MPO Board. 

•           The MPO Board made appointments to the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC).

•           The Executive Director advised the MPO Board that the 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) and Transit Development Plan (TDP) Five Year Major Update are in development.  Information regarding MPO plans and programs will be posted on our new website as it becomes available.  Visit us at:

Marvelous Mulch Program offered in March

Gardens benefit from the use of mulch, retaining moisture, suppressing weeds, and adding an aesthetic quality.  But how much and what types should be used? Do I need to remove “old” mulch?  What about synthetic materials? Get all of your mulch questions answered at a free UF/IFAS Citrus County Extension Gardening program during the month of March.  Choose the location and date that is best for you.

Veterans’ Advisory Board to hold March meeting

Volunteers Prepare for Annual Kid’s Fishing Clinic

Volunteers met Wednesday morning, February 20, 2019 at Fort Island Trail Park to assemble the 300 fishing rods needed for the Annual Kid’s Fishing Clinic scheduled for Saturday, February 23, 2019. 

Members from Citrus Fishing Club, Dixie Bay Boating and Fishing Club, and the Inglis/Yankeetown Lions Club were among those present. This is a FREE event from children ages 5 to 15. Please call Citrus County Parks & Recreation at 352-527-7540 for more information.

Citrus County Utilities Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program is offering a free gardening workshop on March 12, 2019 from 2:00-3:30 pm.  Managing a healthy lawn is often a full time job and recurring expense. Selection of the right materials to accomplish a specific task is always the best place to start. Citrus County Utilities Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program is offering a free gardening workshop on March 26, 2019 from 2:00-3:30 pm.  Fertilization of your lawn and landscape can be complicated.  Using several steps including soil testing, when and how to apply fertilizers and effective irrigation practices after application are essential to proper fertilization practices. Plan before you plant is an important concept when developing sustainable garden ideas.  Basic principles of landscape design include: site evaluation, selection and placement of the proper materials and establishment practices for newly installed sustainable landscape gardens.  “What is and how to create a Florida-friendly Landscape” is the theme of this workshop.
