Senior Programs “March for Meals” Looking for Community Champions

Category: Press Releases       Posted By: Denise Gallagher       Year: 2019

We need Community Champions!! Citrus County’s Meals on Wheels Program participates in the national March for Meals Campaign, which is an annual month-long event, sponsored by the Meals on Wheels Association of America). This event is designed to generate public awareness about senior hunger and to celebrate the invaluable services provided by Senior Nutrition Programs across the country.

March for Meals is also intended to help recruit new volunteers from our community and to increase fundraising from local businesses and supporters.

If you are a local business or community leader in Citrus County, we would be honored for you to participate in this year’s March for Meals “Community Champions” campaign by helping deliver meals to our homebound senior clients on a day of your choosing during the week of March 18th - March 22nd.

In doing so, you can help Citrus County’s Meals on Wheels Program gain much-needed visibility.  Champions deliver with a current volunteer Meals on Wheels Driver and can choose which location they would like to deliver from.   Delivery routes take approximately 2 hours.  Photos are taken of champions with our clients and shared with the media.  This is a great experience and enjoyed by our clients, volunteers, and our Champions.

“March for Meals” PetMeals Program Feeds Seniors’ Companions

Category: Press Releases       Posted By: Denise Gallagher       Year: 2019

Each month, the PetMeals Program provides dog and cat food to the companion pets of senior homebound clients who receive Meals on Wheels.

The PetMeals program began, as a national program, when it was noticed that a very thin man was only taking small bites of his food and then placing his food tray on the floor for a

very overweight Chihuahua to finish the meal.  When asked why he was doing this, he stated he did not have the money to buy dog food any longer and that he would rather go hungry than not feed his beloved pet.

The PetMeals Program is 100 percent donation-based, volunteer driven program that provides dog food and cat food to our senior homebound clients.

Do you have a pet who is a member of your family?  Do you love animals? The PetMeals Program is seeking help from pet lovers throughout Citrus County.

If you are able, please donate unopened bags or cans of dog or cat food to your closest community center or monetary donation can be mailed to:

Senior Programs Join in Nationwide “March for Meals” Celebration

Category: Press Releases       Posted By: Denise Gallagher       Year: 2019

Citrus County Senior Program announced today that it would be participating in the 17th annual March for Meals – a month-long, nationwide celebration of Meals on Wheels and our senior neighbors who rely on the vital service to remain healthy and independent at home. Citrus County Meals on Wheels celebration will include various activities throughout the month of March, including Dining to Donate Events, fundraisers at the community centers and Community Champions.

”The services we provide are a lifeline for seniors of Citrus County and the need is rapidly increasing,” said Janice Hale, Senior Programs Supervisor “Together, we can keep our senior neighbors well-nourished, feeling safer and more connected to our community as they age.”

In Citrus County, we serve approximately 4,500 meals a month to homebound seniors and 2,300 meals to congregate diners.

The annual March for Meals celebration commemorates the historic day in March of 1972 when President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 to include a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older. Since 2002, community-based Meals on Wheels programs from across the country have joined forces for the annual awareness campaign to celebrate this successful public-private partnership and garner the support needed to fill the gap between the seniors served and those still in need.

“The month of March is a fitting time to not only celebrate the successful history of Meals on Wheels, but also bring us together to support a solution that will strengthen communities into the future,” said Ellie Hollander, President and CEO of Meals on Wheels America. “With 12,000 Americans turning 60 each day, now is the time to invest in these vital programs so that we can provide every senior in need with the nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks that will enable them to live healthier and independent in their own homes.”
