In most circumstances you may act as your own contractor subject to statutory limitations. You will be required to read and sign an Owner/Builder Disclosure Statement.
You may obtain an application from the Citrus County Building Division that will explain in detail what is needed to secure a building permit. You can review the Residential Permitting Process and the Application Checklist which are extremely useful tools in making sure your application is complete.
A site plan must be drawn to scale, and shows all existing and proposed structures. Several other items must also be shown, and a list of these items can be found on our application checklist as well as in section 104.2.5 of the Citrus County Code.
You must always be sure that the contractor you hire is licensed and has proper insurance. This information can be given over the phone by contacting the Building Division at 352-537-5310.

The penalty ranges from a civil citation to an arrest and prosecution at the State Attorney's. A first offense violation is a 3rd degree misdemeanor. However, during a declared emergency the 1st offense violation is a felony.
