Community Cat Program

Citrus County Animal Services is reinstating the Community Cat Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate Return (TNVR) program beginning Tuesday, May 19, 2020. Citrus County Residents may bring community cats to the shelter Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between 9am -12pm for free spay/neuter, vaccinations against rabies, microchipping, and ear-tipping. Cats must be in a humane trap (1 cat per trap) and weighing 4lbs or more to be eligible for the program.

Upon intake, residents will be informed of when the cat(s) will be ready to be picked up and returned to the community. To keep the public and staff safe we are asking that citizens maintain social distancing when dropping off cats. You will be asked to wait at the gate for a staff member to assist you. Navigating TNVR processes in the midst of the COVID–19 pandemic will be new to everyone so the intake process will be different and we ask for your patience

Cats can begin reproducing as early as five months of age, so they should be sterilized by that age, or younger. Cats can give birth several times a year, and each litter adds to the millions of cats across the country competing for homes. Close to two million cats are euthanized each year in shelters and animal control facilities nationwide. In addition to population control, sterilization can also eliminate unpleasant behaviors of intact cats, such as fighting and spraying.
