Tire Recycling Event at Landfill Announced

Standing bodies of water can serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and mosquitoes have been  found  to  transmit  Zika  Virus.  In  an  effort  to  reduce  areas  where  water  can  collect  and subsequently reduce mosquito breeding, the Citrus County Solid Waste Management Division will be accepting tires at the Central Landfill free of charge for recycling on Thursday, November 5 and  Friday,  November  6  from  8 am  to  4:30 pm  and  Saturday,  November  7,  2020  from  8 am  to 2:30 pm. This is a co-sponsored event by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

The Central Landfill is located at 230 W Gulf to Lake Highway (SR44) in Lecanto. FL 34461.

During this event residents in assessed and non-assessed areas can dispose of a maximum of twenty five (25) passenger and/or pickup truck tires, without rims free of charge for recycling. This event does not apply to waste tire haulers or commercial entities and is intended for residential only.

The Citrus County Solid Waste Management Division would like to remind residents that they can recycle 5 tires per visit, 2 times per year at no charge.

Residents needing further information about this event, or any other Solid Waste Management Program, may call at (352) 527-7670 or by email at landfillinfo@citrusbocc.com.

Ever Wonder Where Your Recycling Goes?

FREE Mulch!
(Subject to Availability)
We have an abundance of Coarse Mulch available for residents, free of charge. You can obtain it anytime the Central Landfill is open for business, in amounts from the size of a tote, to a tractor-trailer load. We will load your open-top truck or trailer from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM Tuesday through Friday or from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturday, also free of charge. If you need a large amount (large dump truck to tractor trailer) please call ahead to arrange loading. Coarse Mulch is excellent for retaining moisture in flower beds and around shrubs and other plantings, as well as for reducing erosion on slopes and dirt driveways.

The Division of Solid Waste Management provides safe and secure long term disposal of solid waste for the citizens of Citrus County. The Central Landfill is a modern engineered double lined facility that accepts over 100,000 tons of household, commercial, and industrial waste per year.

In addition to offering disposal services, the Division also recycles yard waste, scrap metal, end-of-life electronics, waste oil/filters, antifreeze, cooking oil, tires, car batteries, mercury, and clean concrete.

We also operate a single-stream recycling program located at the Central Landfill.

The Division operates as an enterprise fund, where revenues are generated by user fees charged at the landfill. A Solid Waste assessment on each residential unit in the County ($25 per year), and a fee charged to businesses with waste disposal service allows the County to provide non-revenue generating services such as Bulky Item disposal, Household Hazardous Waste Programs, County-wide Solid Waste Code Enforcement and Litter Pick-up, Adopt-a-Highway and Snag-n-Bag Aquatic Litter Programs, Future Solid Waste Planning, Construction and Capital Projects.

Our goal is to extend the life of the landfill by providing long term sustainable recycling, diversion and waste reduction services to the citizens of Citrus County in an environmentally sound manner.
